About this worksheet

Dialogue is the words that characters say to each other in a story, and it makes a story feel alive. Writers put the exact words inside quotation marks, add a speaking word such as said or asked, and begin a new line when a new person starts to talk. On this worksheet your child reads two short scenes and writes what the characters say on ruled lines.

Building Confidence asks for the words in quotation marks, On Level adds speaking words, and Challenge Me asks for at least four lines of back-and-forth conversation. Each of the six versions has its own scenes. The answer key shows a model, and any dialogue that fits the scene, with the quotation marks in the right place, is correct.
