About this worksheet

A poem uses short lines, sound and picture words to say something in a few words. Many poems for young writers rhyme: the last words of two lines sound alike, as in sky and high. On this worksheet your child writes a short poem about a topic, such as the rain or a favorite food. Building Confidence asks for two lines that rhyme, On Level asks for four lines in which the second and fourth lines rhyme, and Challenge Me adds a simile or a repeated sound.

Each of the six versions has two topics, and the answer key shows a model poem for each. Any poem on the topic that follows the rhyme pattern is correct. Ask your child to read the poem aloud and listen for the rhyme.
