About this worksheet

The small words a and an come before a noun, and choosing between them is one of the first grammar rules first graders can hear for themselves. We use an before a word that starts with a vowel sound, such as an apple, and a before a word that starts with a consonant sound, such as a cat. On this grade 1 worksheet your child reads a short sentence and writes a or an on the blank, with both words shown in brackets.

Standard and challenge sheets put an adjective in front of the noun, so the word that matters is the one right after the blank. Read the sentence out loud and listen to which one sounds right.

What your child will learn

  • Use a before a consonant sound
  • Use an before a vowel sound
  • Listen to the first sound of the next word
  • Write the right article on a blank

Common Core standard: L.1.1.H

Worked example

I see ____ apple. (a / an) Apple starts with the vowel sound a, so write an.

Common mistake

Choosing by the noun instead of the word right after the blank: a big egg, but an egg.

Helpful hint

Say the next word. If it starts with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u), write an; if not, write a.
