About this worksheet

A possessive noun shows who owns something. Add an apostrophe and an s to the owner: Sam has a hat, so it is Sam's hat. The apostrophe tells the reader that the hat belongs to Sam; without it, Sams would just mean more than one Sam. On this grade 1 worksheet each line gives two short sentences, such as The hat belongs to Sam.

It is Sam____ hat. , and your child writes the missing 's after the owner. Support sheets use names, standard sheets add people such as my mother, and challenge sheets add animals and the girl or the boy. Say it out loud together: 'It is Sam's hat.
