An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word, and most end with a period. Days of the week become Mon. , Tues. and Fri. ; months become Jan. , Feb. and Dec. ; titles become Mr. and Dr. ; and the words on an address become St. , Rd. and Ave. Second graders meet these on calendars, envelopes and name tags, and they are asked to write them in a school form. This worksheet gives ten words, and the child writes each short form with its period.
The first letter is always a capital letter when the full word is one, and the period shows that letters were left out. Ask your child to look at a calendar or an envelope at home and find three abbreviations. Months such as May, June and July are short already and are not shortened.
Common Core standard: L.2.2
