About this worksheet

Commas are small marks that help a reader know where to pause. Two jobs matter most in second grade. The first is a list: when three or more things are named in a row, a comma goes between them, as in apples, pears, and plums. The second is a date: a comma goes between the day and the year, as in June 5, 2026, and when the date comes in the middle of a sentence another comma follows the year.

This worksheet gives six sentences, each in three versions that differ only in where the commas are, and the child circles the version that is right. Ask your child to read each one aloud and listen for the pauses. A list should have a small pause after each thing, and a date should pause after the day.
