A contraction is a short way to write two words as one. Some letters are left out, and an apostrophe takes the place of the missing letters: do not becomes don't, and I am becomes I'm. Second graders see contractions in almost everything they read, and writing them correctly means putting the apostrophe exactly where the letters were dropped.
This worksheet gives ten pairs of words, and the child writes the contraction on the line. Most use not, am, is, are, will or have. Ask your child to say the contraction and name the letters that vanished: in don't the o is gone. Two contractions do not follow the pattern, won't and can't, and those are worth learning one at a time.
Common Core standard: L.2.2.C
