About this worksheet

Length word problems combine two first-grade skills: knowing what a length means and adding or subtracting to compare. In these stories two things have lengths in inches, and the question is either how long they are end to end or how much longer one is than the other. On this grade 1 worksheet each story is two or three short sentences, and your child writes the answer on the line.

Support sheets use lengths up to 10 inches, standard sheets go to 15 and challenge sheets go to 20. Read the story out loud, then ask your child to say which numbers matter and whether to add or subtract. Drawing the two lengths as bars is a good way to check.

What your child will learn

  • Add two lengths to find the total length
  • Subtract to find how much longer one length is
  • Read a short story and pick out the numbers
  • Write a length with its unit

Common Core standard: 1.MD.A.2
