Grade 2 Math Worksheet

Write the missing number.

A missing addend sum gives the first number and the total and asks for the number that was added, as in 37 + ____ = 49. It is the first step toward algebra, because the child has to think about the equation instead of just computing it left to right. The easiest way in is to subtract: 49 take away 37 leaves 12. Another way is to count up from 37 to 49.
This worksheet has sixteen sums within 100 written in columns, some that need no regrouping and some that do, such as 59 + ____ = 87. Ask your child to check each answer by adding it back: 37 + 12 really is 49. A child who can do this is also learning that an equation is a balance, and that skill is used in every later year of math.
