Grade 3 Math Worksheet

Write >, <, or = between the two fractions.

To compare two fractions, a third grader looks at the size of the pieces and how many pieces there are. When the bottoms are the same, the pieces are the same size, so the fraction with more pieces is greater. When the tops are the same, the fraction with the smaller bottom has bigger pieces, so it is greater. On this worksheet your child looks at two bars, each cut into equal parts with some shaded, and writes greater than, less than or equal to between the fractions.
Building Confidence compares fractions with the same bottom, On Level adds fractions with the same top, and Challenge Me includes fractions that are equal, such as one half and two fourths. Ask your child to say which shaded part is bigger before writing the sign.
Common Core standard: 3.NF.A.3.D
3/4 and 2/4 have the same size pieces and 3 pieces is more than 2 pieces, so 3/4 > 2/4.
Thinking the fraction with the bigger bottom number is the bigger fraction: 1/8 is less than 1/4.
Same bottom: more pieces is bigger. Same top: smaller bottom means bigger pieces.
