About this worksheet

The perimeter of a shape is the distance around its edge. For a rectangle, the two long sides are the same length and the two short sides are the same length, so a child can add all four sides, or double the length and the width and add them. On this worksheet your child sees nine rectangles on a grid, each with its two sides labelled in meters, and writes the perimeter in meters.

Building Confidence uses small rectangles up to 5 by 5, On Level uses sides up to 8, and Challenge Me uses sides up to 9, including squares. Ask your child to walk a finger around the edge, saying each side as they go, and to check that all four sides were counted.

What your child will learn

  • Find the perimeter by adding all four sides
  • Use the fact that opposite sides of a rectangle are equal
  • Tell perimeter apart from area

Common Core standard: 3.MD.D.8

Worked example

A rectangle 5 meters long and 3 meters wide has sides 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 meters around.

Common mistake

Adding only the two sides that are labelled, and leaving out the two sides that are not.
