Reading an analog clock to the nearest five minutes is the step before telling time to the exact minute. The short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes, and each number on the clock face stands for five minutes more, so the 5 means 25 minutes past the hour. On this worksheet your child looks at nine clocks and writes each time as hours and minutes, such as 3:25.
Building Confidence uses o'clock, half past and quarter past and quarter to times, On Level uses every five minutes, and Challenge Me uses the five-minute times where the hour hand sits close to the next hour. Ask your child to count by fives around the clock and to check which hour the short hand has just passed.
What your child will learn
Read the hour from the short hand
Count by fives to read the minutes
Write a time as hours and minutes
Common Core standard: 2.MD.C.7, 3.MD.A.1
Worked example
The short hand is just past the 3 and the long hand points at the 5. That is 3 hours and 25 minutes: 3:25.
Common mistake
Reading the number the long hand points to as minutes (5 instead of 25).
