About this worksheet

To add decimals in a column, line up the decimal points so that tenths sit under tenths and hundredths under hundredths, then add from the right as with whole numbers. On this fifth grade sheet a child adds twelve pairs of decimals written in columns, each with the same number of decimal places so the points line up. Each version has different numbers, and the answer key shows every sum.

What your child will learn

  • Line up the decimal points
  • Add tenths and hundredths
  • Carry across the decimal point
  • Write the decimal point in the answer

Common Core standard: 5.NBT.B.7

Worked example

34.56 + 8.77 = 43.33: line up the points, add the hundredths 6 + 7 = 13, write 3 and carry 1.

Common mistake

Lining the numbers up by their last digit instead of by the decimal point.

Helpful hint

The decimal points go in a straight line, and the answer's point goes straight under them.
