When two fractions have the same bottom number their pieces are the same size, so only the top numbers are added: 3/5 + 4/5 = 7/5, which is 1 2/5. The answer is then written in simplest form, as a mixed number when it is more than 1, and reduced when the top and bottom share a factor.
This fifth grade sheet has twenty sums of this kind. Each version has different fractions, and the answer key gives every sum in simplest form.
Common Core standard: 4.NF.B.3
3/5 + 4/5 = 7/5 = 1 2/5.
Adding the bottom numbers too, so 3/5 + 4/5 becomes 7/10.
Add the tops. The bottom stays the same. Then simplify.
