About this worksheet

Equivalent fractions name the same amount in different-size pieces: 3/4 is the same as 9/12, because the top and the bottom are both multiplied by 3. Finding the missing number in a pair of equivalent fractions is the skill behind comparing, adding and simplifying fractions.

On this fifth grade sheet a child completes sixteen pairs, some with the top missing and some with the bottom, in a mixed order. Each version has different fractions, and the answer key gives each missing number.

What your child will learn

  • Multiply the top and bottom by the same number
  • Find the missing top number
  • Find the missing bottom number
  • See that equivalent fractions are the same amount

Common Core standard: 4.NF.A.1

Worked example

3/4 = 9/12, because 3 × 3 = 9 and 4 × 3 = 12.

Common mistake

Changing only the top or only the bottom, so 3/4 = 9/4.

Helpful hint

Find the number the known top or bottom was multiplied by, then multiply the other part by it.
