About this worksheet

A mixed number such as 2 3/5 is a whole number and a fraction together, and it can also be written as one improper fraction, 13/5. To change it, multiply the whole number by the bottom number, add the top number, and keep the same bottom number.

This fifth grade sheet has twenty mixed numbers, and the child writes each as an improper fraction on the line after the equals sign. Each version has different numbers, and the answer key gives every fraction.

What your child will learn

  • Read a mixed number
  • Multiply the whole by the bottom number
  • Add the top number
  • Keep the same bottom number

Common Core standard: 4.NF.B.3

Worked example

2 3/5 = (2 × 5 + 3)/5 = 13/5.
