One more and one less are the first number relationships a child can see without counting from the beginning. If there are six and one more joins, there are seven, and the child who knows this does not need to count all seven again. Each item on this page is one short sentence with a box in it, such as 1 more than 6 is __. The questions alternate between one more and one less, so the child has to read the small word each time.
Support sheets stay within 10 and use small numbers; standard and challenge sheets go up to 20. Help your child by holding up fingers: show six, put up one more, and say what the number is now. Taking one finger down shows one less. Both ideas build the counting on and counting back that addition and subtraction need.
Common Core standard: K.CC.A.2
1 more than 6 is 7, because 7 comes right after 6 when we count.
Giving the same number back, or the number two away, because the counting step is skipped.
Say the number, then say the next number if you want one more, or the number before it for one less.
