About this worksheet

Children see shapes everywhere long before they know their names, and kindergarten is where the names become familiar words: circle, square, triangle, rectangle and hexagon. On this page each item shows one flat shape in a large size, with three shape names printed under it, and the child circles the right name. A square and a rectangle are never offered together on one line, because a square is also a special kind of rectangle, and that idea can wait for later.

Every sheet shows all five shapes. Support pages offer two names to choose from, standard pages offer three, and challenge pages offer four. Count the sides together if the name is hard to remember: three sides is a triangle, four sides is a square or rectangle, and six sides is a hexagon. Then look for the shapes in your kitchen and on your street.

What your child will learn

  • Name a circle, square, triangle, rectangle and hexagon
  • Read a shape name and match it to the picture
  • Count sides to help tell shapes apart
  • Find shapes in the world

Common Core standard: K.G.A.2

Worked example

The shape has three straight sides and three corners. Its name is triangle, so circle the word triangle.
