Kindergarten Math Worksheet

Circle the picture that fits in the empty box.

Finding the end of a pattern is one thing, and finding a gap in the middle is a little harder. The child cannot just keep going, because the picture before the gap and the picture after the gap both help to say what is missing. On this page every item is a row of pictures that repeats, with one empty box somewhere in the middle, and the child circles the picture that fits.
The empty box is never at the very end, because that is the job of the pattern-extending sheet. Support sheets use two-picture patterns, and standard and challenge sheets use patterns of three pictures such as apple, star, flower. Ask your child to say the row aloud, clapping at the gap, and then say it again with the missing picture put in. If it sounds right, it is right.
Common Core standard: K.MD.B.3
The row is apple, star, an empty box, star, apple, star. The pattern is apple, star, so an apple fits in the box.
Choosing the picture that sits next to the gap, instead of the one the pattern needs.
Say the row aloud, and find the part that repeats.
