About this worksheet

Subtraction within 10 asks a child to start with a number, take some away, and say what is left. Children often count the number that is taken away instead of the number that remains, or count down one too many. Every item on this page is a short sentence, such as 8 - 3 = __, with a box to write the difference in, and twelve different sentences fit on a page. Support sheets take away from numbers up to 7.

Standard sheets use numbers from 4 to 10, and challenge sheets stay with 7 to 10, where counting back becomes slow and the facts are worth learning by heart. A good check is to add: if 8 - 3 is 5, then 5 + 3 should be 8. Use fingers or a number line to count back, starting from the first number rather than from one.
