A three-year-old learns a colour word by using it, not by picking it out of a row of printed pictures — a page that is printed in black and white cannot show what red looks like anyway. So this worksheet works the way a coloring book does. A grown-up reads the line out loud, names a colour, and the child picks up the matching crayon and colours a real, familiar object: an apple, a banana, a frog, a balloon on the easiest sheets, and a carrot, a bear, a flower or an umbrella on the next ones, with the child choosing the crayon from the box instead of being handed it.

Because a crayon mark cannot be checked by a computer, every item here is reviewed by the adult rather than scored automatically, which is exactly how a colouring page has always worked. The hardest sheets put three pictures in a row, name one of them with a colour, and ask the child to find it and colour just that one. Watch whether your child names the colour out loud before choosing a crayon; naming first is what makes the word stick.
