About this worksheet

A cause is why something happens, and an effect is what happens because of it. Seeing that one thing leads to another is how first graders begin to understand why characters act and why things in science and in everyday life happen. On this grade 1 worksheet each line gives a cause, such as 'It rained all day', and your child circles the effect from three choices: 'The grass got wet'.

The wrong choices come from the same setting but are not caused by the first sentence. Ask your child 'What happened because of that? ' and use the word because to check the answer: 'The grass got wet because it rained.

What your child will learn

  • Tell a cause from an effect
  • Find what happens because of an event
  • Use the word because to check an answer
  • Read short sentences about everyday events

Common Core standard: RI.1.8
