About this worksheet

A fact is something that is true and can be checked, such as 'A spider has eight legs'. An opinion tells what someone thinks or feels, such as 'Pizza is the best food', and different people can disagree about it. Telling the two apart is a skill that grows through every grade. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is one sentence, and your child circles the word fact or opinion.

Half of the sentences are facts and half are opinions, in a mixed order. Words such as best, better, yummy and fun are clues that a sentence is an opinion, but some opinions have no clue word, such as 'The soup is too hot for me', so the child has to ask whether it can be checked. Ask your child: could we check this? If yes, it is a fact.

What your child will learn

  • Tell a fact from an opinion
  • Spot opinion words such as best, fun and yummy
  • Ask whether a sentence can be checked
  • Read short sentences about everyday things

Common Core standard: RI.1.8

Worked example

A spider has eight legs. We can count and check, so it is a fact. Pizza is the best food. Not everyone agrees, so it is an opinion.

Common mistake

Calling a sentence a fact because it sounds sure of itself, or an opinion because it is about something the child dislikes.

Helpful hint

Ask: can we check it? Checking means fact. Thinking or feeling means opinion.
