About this worksheet

To predict is to use clues to guess what will happen next, and good readers do it all the time. On this grade 1 worksheet each question is a story of three short sentences with a clear set of clues, such as dark clouds and an umbrella, and your child circles what will happen next from three choices.

The wrong choices do not fit the clues, so there is one sensible prediction. Support, standard and challenge sheets use different stories. Ask your child which words in the story gave the clue, and whether the prediction makes sense. After reading, check: did the story end the way you guessed?

What your child will learn

  • Use clues in a story to predict what happens next
  • Tell a prediction that makes sense from one that does not
  • Point to the words that give the clue
  • Read three-sentence stories
