About this worksheet

Reading a sentence and picturing what it says is the heart of early comprehension. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is one short sentence, and your child reads it and circles the picture that goes with it. Only one of the pictures is named in the sentence, so the child has to read the key word, not just guess.

The sentences use common first-grade words such as the, is, on, and we. Support sheets show three pictures to choose from and standard and challenge sheets show four. Have your child read each sentence out loud, point to the picture, and say why it matches.

What your child will learn

  • Read a short sentence
  • Find the key word for the picture
  • Match words to a picture
  • Read sentences with common sight words

Common Core standard: RF.1.4.A

Worked example

The sentence says: The pig is in the mud. The key word is pig. Circle the picture of the pig.
