Grade 1 Reading Worksheet

Say the picture's name. Circle the letter it starts with.

Hearing the first sound in a word is the first step in connecting sounds to letters, and it is the skill behind sounding out words. On this grade 1 worksheet each box shows a picture, and your child says its name out loud, listens for the first sound and circles the letter that makes it from three choices.
The pictures are not labelled, so the child has to say the word. The wrong letters never sound like the right one, so there is one right answer. Say the word slowly and stretch the first sound: sssun.
Common Core standard: RF.1.2.C
The picture is a sun. Say it slowly: sssun. The first sound is /s/, so circle s.
