Grade 1 Reading Worksheet

Say the picture's name. Circle the letters that finish the word.

When two vowels sit side by side in a short word, the first one usually says its name and the second one stays quiet: boat says /bōt/, tree says /trē/. Pairs such as ee, ea and oa are called vowel teams. Children learn them as patterns, because the same sound can be spelled more than one way: ee and ea both say /ē/.
On this grade 1 worksheet each box shows a picture and its word with the vowel team missing, and your child says the picture's name and circles the team that finishes the word from ee, ea and oa. The pictures are not labelled. Ask your child to say the word and then check that it looks right.
Common Core standard: RF.1.3
The picture is a boat and the word shows b _ _ t. The word says /bōt/, a long o, and oa makes that sound, so circle oa.
Picking the team by the sound alone, since ee and ea sound the same, instead of remembering the way the word looks.
Say the picture's name and think how the word looks in books.
