About this worksheet

When first graders meet an unknown word, they are learning to use nearby words as clues instead of stopping immediately. Context clues may name an example, show an action, describe a feeling, or give an opposite. This worksheet uses short sentences where one word can be figured out from the rest of the sentence. Children choose a meaning, identify the clue words, and decide which strategy helped. Support pages use very direct clues. Standard and challenge pages include less familiar words such as damp, sturdy, and vanish, but each meaning is still supported by the sentence. This fills the L.1.4.a expectation to use sentence-level context as a clue to meaning. Ask children to reread the whole sentence and replace the unknown word with the answer to see if it makes sense.
