About this worksheet

Grouping words by meaning, as in a cat and a frog are both animals, helps children learn new words and see how words are connected. It is the first step in vocabulary work that later becomes categories, synonyms and word webs. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows one word, and your child circles the group it belongs to from three choices: animals, foods, clothes or toys.

Support, standard and challenge sheets use different words, and the three groups offered change from line to line. Ask your child to say why: a boot is something you wear, so it goes with the clothes. Sorting real objects at home is a good warm-up.

What your child will learn

  • Sort words into groups by meaning
  • Know groups such as animals, foods, clothes and toys
  • Explain why a word belongs to a group
  • Build vocabulary by thinking about how words connect

Common Core standard: L.1.5.A

Worked example

The word is boot. The groups are animals, clothes and toys. You wear a boot, so circle clothes.

Common mistake

Choosing the group because the word looks like another word, not because of its meaning.

Helpful hint
