About this worksheet

Many everyday words have more than one meaning: a bat is an animal and a bat is a stick, and a duck is a bird and also what you do when something is flying at your head. A first grader can only tell which meaning is meant by reading the whole sentence. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is a short sentence with one word in capital letters, and your child circles the meaning that fits from two choices.

A word comes up with a different meaning on a different version. Ask your child to say another sentence that uses the other meaning, which is a good way to show they know both.

What your child will learn

  • Know that one word can have two meanings
  • Use the sentence to pick the right meaning
  • Read words such as bat, duck, ring and watch
  • Say a sentence for each meaning of a word

Common Core standard: L.1.4.A

Worked example

A BAT flew out of the cave. A bat in a cave is an animal that flies at night, not a stick, so circle an animal that flies at night.

Common mistake

Choosing the meaning that comes to mind first without reading the rest of the sentence.

Helpful hint

Read the whole sentence, then try each meaning in it.
