About this worksheet
Fluent reading asks fifth graders to read grade-level text accurately, at a useful pace, and with expression that matches meaning asks fifth graders to read closely, connect ideas across sentences, and choose evidence rather than a familiar-sounding answer. Students may rush through complex sentences or read every word in the same voice even when punctuation and context show how the line should sound. This worksheet uses compact passages and source pairs so students must return to the words on the page before answering. Students choose helpful rereading strategies, use punctuation cues, identify accurate phrasing, and explain how expression supports comprehension. Support versions use more direct wording. Standard and challenge versions add closer choices, longer evidence, or a second source to compare. Ask your child to point to the line, feature, or reason that proves the answer. If a choice sounds reasonable but cannot be proved from the text, it is not the best reading answer.

Use punctuation cues
Improve phrasing
Self-correct
Worked example
A reader should pause after an introductory phrase and reread if a sentence stops making sense.

Reading quickly but missing meaning, punctuation, or self-correction.
Helpful hint
Fluency should sound smooth and should still protect meaning.
