About this worksheet
Synonyms, antonyms, and analogies ask students to compare words by meaning and by relationship asks fifth graders to read closely, connect ideas across sentences, and choose evidence rather than a familiar-sounding answer. Students may choose a word from the same topic even when it is not a synonym, opposite, or matching analogy relationship. This worksheet uses compact passages and source pairs so students must return to the words on the page before answering. Students identify synonyms, identify antonyms, use context for precise meaning, complete analogies, and explain how word relationships work. Support versions use more direct wording. Standard and challenge versions add closer choices, longer evidence, or a second source to compare. Ask your child to point to the line, feature, or reason that proves the answer. If a choice sounds reasonable but cannot be proved from the text, it is not the best reading answer.
What your child will learn
Find synonyms
Find antonyms
Complete analogies
Use context clues
Worked example
If stable means steady, then changing is an antonym because it means nearly the opposite.
Common mistake
Choosing a related word instead of a word with the same or opposite meaning.
Helpful hint
Name the relationship first: same meaning, opposite meaning, or matching pair.
