Kindergarten Levelled Reading: Levels A-C worksheets

Levels A, B and C are the first three steps on the reading-book ladder that schools use to match a child to a book, so this is the sheet for a child who is just starting to read short sentences. Levelled reading gives a child a book that matches their exact reading stage, then steps them up gradually as they grow. Levels A through C sit at the very start of that ladder: a few short sentences built from the same repeated pattern, familiar everyday words, and one clear animal doing one clear thing. A child at this level may sound out most of the words correctly and still lose track of what actually happened, because decoding takes so much effort that understanding gets pushed aside.

This worksheet prints two tiny stories on every sheet, such as The dog is at the park. The dog sees a ball. The dog is happy. After each story the child answers four questions by pointing to a picture: who the story is about, where it happens, what the animal sees, and how it feels. There is nothing to type and no long word to read in the answers. Read the story aloud together first if your child needs it, then let them find the answers on their own. When your child is ready to move up, Levels D-G continue the same ladder with longer stories.
