The third group of kindergarten sight words has the longer and trickier words: have, with, they, what, went, who, there and where. Many of them break the usual sound rules, so they cannot be sounded out and have to be remembered by sight. The page works the same way as the earlier sets: one word is printed in large letters, three words sit next to it, and the child circles the one that is exactly the same.
The wrong words are real words that look almost the same, such as they and then, or what and that, so the child must look at every letter. A child who is ready for this set can already read the plainer words in sets one and two without help. Say each word aloud before choosing, and then use it in a sentence of your own. Little sentences help the words stick, because meaning holds the spelling in memory.
What your child will learn
Recognize common words by sight
Find the same word among look-alikes
Check every letter in order
Read the words in a sentence
Common Core standard: RF.K.3.C
Worked example
The first word is they. The choices are then, they and them. The letters t, h, e, y are all there only in they.
Common mistake
Guessing from the first letter or the length of the word instead of checking every letter.
Helpful hint
Say the word, then check each letter from left to right.
