The first real reading a child does is not a story but a single sentence: a few simple words that mean something they can see. On this page every item is a short sentence, such as The cat naps, and a row of three pictures, and the child reads the sentence and circles the picture it tells about. The sentences use words a beginner can sound out or already knows by sight, and each one has one main word, the name of the thing, which is the word to look for.
Support sheets use the shortest sentences, and challenge sheets offer pictures that are more alike. Let your child read it aloud before choosing, and point to each word as it is said. If a word is hard, say it together and ask what picture would go with it. Reading it aloud and matching it to a picture shows that the print has meaning.
