About this worksheet

The moon does not make its own light. We see it because the sun lights part of it, and as the moon moves around the Earth we see more or less of the lit part. That is why the moon seems to change shape over about a month: a full moon is a bright circle, a half moon is a half circle, a crescent is a thin curve and a new moon is dark.

On this grade 1 worksheet each line is a short clue, such as Half of the moon's face is bright, and your child circles the picture of the moon that matches it from three or four moons. A sheet has all four moon shapes. Look at the real moon together tonight and say what shape it is.

What your child will learn

  • Know that the moon seems to change shape
  • Tell a full moon, half moon, crescent moon and new moon apart
  • Read a clue and match it to a picture
  • Look at the moon in the sky and describe it

NGSS standard: 1-ESS1-1

Worked example

The clue says only a thin curved piece of the moon is bright. That is a crescent, so circle the thin curved moon.

Common mistake

Choosing the half moon for a crescent, or thinking the moon is really changing shape when we only see more or less of its lit side.

Helpful hint

Think about how much of the moon is bright: all, half, a thin curve or none.
