About this worksheet

Scientists use a handful of skills again and again. They observe, which means they use their senses to notice details, such as looking at a leaf through a magnifying glass or listening to the rain. They measure, which means they use a tool such as a ruler, a scale or a thermometer to find out how long, how heavy or how hot. They predict, which means they say what they think will happen before they test it.

They record, which means they write, draw or make a chart of what they find so that they do not forget. And they stay safe, wearing goggles, washing hands and listening to the teacher. This worksheet gives eight young scientists, and the child circles the skill that each one is using. Ask your child to say which skill they used the last time they looked closely at something.

What your child will learn

  • Name five science skills
  • Tell which skill a scientist is using
  • Know a few lab safety rules

NGSS standard: K-2-ETS1-1

Worked example

Sam uses a ruler to find how long a pencil is. A ruler is a measuring tool, so Sam is measuring.

Common mistake

Calling predicting observing. A prediction is what you think will happen, not what you see now.

Helpful hint

Is the scientist using senses, a tool, a guess, a notebook or a safety rule?
