A simple machine is a tool with few or no moving parts that makes work easier. There are several kinds. A lever is a bar that turns on a point, like a seesaw or the handle of a bottle opener. A pulley is a wheel with a rope that helps lift things. A wedge is a shape that splits or cuts, like the blade of an axe. A screw is a slanted ridge around a post that holds things together or lifts them.
A wheel and axle is a wheel joined to a rod, like a doorknob or a bicycle wheel. People have used these machines for thousands of years. This worksheet shows five pictures, and the child writes which simple machine each picture shows, using the word box. Ask your child to find a lever, a wheel and axle and a screw at home.
