About this worksheet

Everything we touch is matter, and matter comes in three common states. A solid, like a spoon or a rock, keeps its own shape. A liquid, like milk or juice, pours and takes the shape of its cup. A gas, like the air in a balloon or the steam above a pot, spreads out to fill whatever space it is in. This worksheet lists nine things, three of each state, mixed up, and your child writes solid, liquid or gas beside each one.

Gases are the hardest because they are invisible, so talk about what happens when you let air out of a balloon. Ask your child to test each answer against the tip at the top: does it keep its shape, pour, or spread out?

What your child will learn

  • Sort everyday things into solids, liquids and gases
  • Describe how each state of matter behaves
  • Use the way a material moves or keeps its shape as evidence

NGSS standard: 2-PS1-1

Worked example

A spoon keeps its own shape, so it is a solid. Milk pours and takes the shape of the glass, so it is a liquid.

Common mistake

Calling a gas a liquid or a solid because it cannot be seen, or calling a powder or a pile of small pieces a liquid.

Helpful hint

Does it keep its shape, pour, or spread out to fill the space?
