About this worksheet

Proofreading is a spelling skill of its own: a child has to look at a word and know that it looks wrong. Each line on this page gives a short hint about a word and three spellings, and only one is correct. The other two are the kind of mistakes children really make, such as leaving out a letter, adding an extra one, or choosing the wrong vowel team.

The hint never says the word, so your child has to work out the word first, then check each spelling against the word they have in mind. Encourage your child to say the word slowly and then look for the spelling that matches. If two spellings look right, point to the letters that are different and decide which looks more like a word from a book.

What your child will learn

  • Work out a word from a hint and know how it is spelled
  • Spot a missing, extra or wrong letter
  • Choose the correct spelling from three
  • Check spelling by looking closely at each letter

Common Core standard: L.2.2.E

Worked example

The hint says it floats on water. The choices are bote, boat and boet. Boat is right, because oa spells the long o sound in this word.

Common mistake

Choosing the spelling that matches how the word sounds instead of how the word is written.

Helpful hint

Say the word slowly, then look for the spelling with every sound written the usual way.
