About this worksheet

Every word has a vowel sound, and spelling it correctly is the heart of early spelling. In a short vowel word such as cat, bed or sun, one vowel letter sits between two consonants and makes its short sound. In a long vowel word such as cake, kite or robe, a silent e at the end makes the first vowel say its name. This worksheet shows twelve words in letter boxes with the vowel left out, and a short clue under each tells which word it is, so a child can write the vowel that belongs.

The support sheet uses short vowel words, the standard sheet mixes short and long words, and the challenge sheet has more long vowel words with a silent e. Ask your child to say the word slowly, listen for the vowel, and then check it with the clue.
