About this worksheet

A preposition is a small word that links a noun to the rest of the sentence and often tells where: the cat sleeps on the bed, the ball rolled under the chair. Children use these words in speech all day but rarely notice them as a part of speech, and in first grade the goal is simply to spot them. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is a short sentence followed by three words from it: an action word, a place word and the name of a thing, and your child circles the one that shows where.

Most lines on every sheet use in, on and under; support sheets add one other place word, such as behind or near, and later sheets add two or three, such as beside, through and across. Act each one out with a toy and a box.

What your child will learn

  • Find the word that tells where
  • Know words such as in, on, under and behind
  • Tell a place word from an action word and a naming word
  • Use place words to say exactly where something is

Common Core standard: L.1.1.I

Worked example

The cat sleeps on the bed. Which word shows where? Sleeps is what the cat does and bed is a thing. On shows where the cat is, so circle on.

Common mistake

Circling the thing, such as bed, instead of the small word that shows where it is.

Helpful hint

Ask: where is it? The small word before the place tells you.
