About this worksheet

A possessive noun shows who owns something. For one owner, add an apostrophe and an s: the toy that belongs to Matt becomes Matt's toy, and the hat that belongs to the dog becomes the dog's hat. This is a different job for the apostrophe than in a contraction, where it stands for missing letters. Here it shows ownership, and the s comes after it.

This worksheet gives ten phrases in the form the toy that belongs to Matt, and the child writes the shorter phrase with an apostrophe on the line. Ask your child to find the owner first, then write the owner with 's, then the thing. Watch for toys' or toy's: the apostrophe goes with the owner, not with the thing owned.

What your child will learn

  • Show that one person or animal owns something
  • Add an apostrophe and s to the owner
  • Tell a possessive from a plural

Common Core standard: L.2.2.C

Worked example

the car that belongs to Dad becomes Dad's car. The owner is Dad, so the apostrophe and s go on Dad.

Common mistake

Putting the apostrophe on the thing owned (car's Dad) or leaving it out (Dads car).

Helpful hint

Find the owner. Add an apostrophe and s to the owner, then the thing.
