Comparing two-digit numbers sounds simple until you watch a child do it. Many first graders compare the digits they notice first rather than the digits that matter, so they decide 19 is bigger than 21 because nine is bigger than one. The reliable method is to look at the tens first and only look at the ones when the tens match. This worksheet builds that habit, and it includes pairs with equal tens so your child has to move on to the ones rather than guessing. The symbols themselves are a second hurdle. Children reverse the greater than and less than signs constantly, so several questions ask for the word instead of the symbol, which separates knowing which number is bigger from remembering how to write it down.
Compare 34 and 38. The tens are both 3, so look at the ones. Four is less than eight, so 34 < 38.
