Addition facts within ten are the facts children should eventually know without thinking, because everything from adding within twenty to column addition depends on retrieving them quickly. Getting there takes two stages. First a child counts objects, then counts on from the larger number, and finally remembers the answer. This worksheet supports that progression by illustrating some questions with groups of objects while leaving others as bare number sentences, so your child moves between the concrete and the abstract on the same page. If a question stalls, cover the picture and ask what the bigger number is, then count on from there. Do not rush the move to recall; a child who counts accurately will memorise the facts naturally with practice.
For 3 + 4, start at 4 and count on three: 5, 6, 7. So 3 + 4 = 7.
Counting the first group again instead of counting on from it.
Put the bigger number in your head and count on with your fingers.
