A ten frame is a grid of ten boxes, and it makes the pairs of numbers that add to ten easy to see: when 7 boxes are filled, 3 are empty. Knowing these pairs by heart is the foundation for adding within twenty, because most larger facts are solved by making a ten first. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows a ten frame with some counters in it and an addition sentence with a gap, such as 7 + ____ = 10, and your child writes how many more are needed to fill the frame.
Support sheets use frames that are mostly full, and challenge sheets use frames with only a few counters. Cover the empty boxes with your hand and ask how many are missing.
Common Core standard: 1.OA.C.6
The frame has 6 counters. 6 + ____ = 10. Four boxes are empty, so write 4.
Counting the counters and writing that number instead of the empty boxes.
Count the empty boxes. That is how many more make 10.
