Doubles plus one, also called near doubles, is a strategy for adding two numbers that are one apart, such as 6 + 7. A child who knows that 6 + 6 is 12 can add one more to get 13. This turns a fact that is hard to remember into one that is easy to work out. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is an addition sentence made of two numbers that are one apart, such as 5 + 6 or 8 + 7, and your child writes the sum on the line.
Support sheets keep the totals to 11 or less, standard sheets use numbers up to 9, and challenge sheets use the larger near doubles. Ask your child which double is closest, then add one.

For 6 + 7, think 6 + 6 = 12. 7 is one more than 6, so the answer is one more than 12. Write 13.
Using the double but forgetting to add the extra one, so writing 12 for 6 + 7.
