A number bond is a pair of numbers that make a whole, and the pairs that make 10 are the most useful ones to know: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5. Once a child knows them without counting, adding within twenty becomes much easier, because most big facts are solved by making a ten first. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is an addition sentence with a gap, such as 7 + ____ = 10, and your child writes the number that makes 10.
The gap is sometimes first and sometimes second, so your child learns that the pair works either way round. Say the pairs out loud together, then try them with ten counters.
Common Core standard: 1.OA.C.6
7 + ____ = 10. Start at 7 and count up to 10: 8, 9, 10. That is 3 more, so write 3.
Writing the sum instead of the missing part, for example writing 17 for 7 + ____ = 10.
Think of ten fingers. Put 7 down. How many are left up?
