Addition within 5 is a child’s first experience of treating two small groups as one whole. Many kindergartners can count each group separately but restart at one or forget which objects they have already counted after the groups join. The pictures on this worksheet keep the quantities visible while prompts rotate among joining, counting both parts, and adding more to a starting group. Zero is included because adding nothing is an important idea, not a trick. Support versions use totals through three, standard versions reach four, and challenge versions use the full range through five. Encourage your child to say the first amount, then count on through the second group instead of recounting everything whenever they are ready. Fingers or counters are useful checks. The goal is to understand what addition does before expecting quick recall of number facts.
