Kindergarten Math Worksheet

Count backwards. Write the missing number.

Counting backwards is harder than counting forward because the child has used the forward order for so long that it comes automatically. The backward count is what subtraction is built on, so it is worth a little practice every day. On this page each item is a short row of number cards that counts down, such as 9, 8, 7, 6, with one card left empty. The child says the numbers aloud from the left, notices where the count stops, and writes the missing number straight into the empty card.
Support sheets count down from 10 or less. Standard and challenge sheets start as high as 20, and the empty card can be anywhere in the row, so the child cannot always rely on the card before it. A countdown to a rocket launch is a good way to practice away from the page.
Common Core standard: K.CC.A.2
The row says 9, 8, an empty card, 6. Counting down from 8 comes 7, so write 7.
Counting up instead of down, so the number after the card is written in place of the number before it.
Say the numbers out loud going down, and listen for the one that is missing.
